Getting Started & Advancing in Research

There are many ways to get involved in undergraduate research in Coastal & Marine Sciences, whether you are just getting started or looking to build on previous research experience. Research opportunities may be paid, credit-bearing, or volunteer-based and are available during the academic year and summer. Students interested in continuing their research as seniors can fulfill the COLL 400 capstone requirement through either the Departmental Honors Program or Senior Research.

Getting involved in research is a student-driven process. The guide below is designed to help you prepare, explore research opportunities, and confidently connect with faculty whose research aligns with your interests. Before jumping in, think about your time, transportation (especially for the Batten School & VIMS), and motivation. Research is a commitment, so make sure you're ready to show up consistently and eager to learn.

There is now shuttle service between W&M's main campus and the Batten School & VIMS. Make sure it fits your schedule or check if you have an alternate means of transportation.

Consider the following:

Are you sure you want to do research?
Do you have time for research? Each credit equates to 3+ hours of work each week.

Reflect on classes, topics or questions that excite you. You don't need a narrow focus, but having a general idea of what interests you will help you find labs that are a good fit. Choose something you'll enjoy spending time on over weeks or months. Ask yourself:

Why do I want to do research?
What am I curious or passionate about?
Who is doing this type of research?

Look for Batten School & VIMS or W&M faculty whose research aligns with your interests. Focus on a small group rather than everyone. Check out lab websites to see what kind of projects they work on and whether undergraduates get involved. Things to consider:

Who is performing work in this area?
Be sure they are active: are they publishing?
Are there others working in their lab?
Is there grant money?

Read a little about each faculty member's research so you can speak thoughtfully about it. Think about what draws you to their work and what skills you hope to gain. This preparation helps you write a strong, personalized email. Recommendation:

Send a personalized email to each prospective mentor. Customize it. Form letters are easily discarded.
If you don't get a response, wait 2 weeks and send again.

When a faculty member replies and is interested, great news! Don't be nervous, but do take time to prepare. Be ready to talk about what specifically interests you about their research and why it caught your attention. Good questions to ask:
