Resources for Educators

The Batten School & VIMS offer a number of learning and teaching resources for formal and informal educators in the K-12 arena.

Field Trips

The Office of Outreach & Engagement offers field-based programs to provide an introduction to a wide variety of estuarine environments and to provide a meaningful Chesapeake Bay experience.  Programs may include wading field trips focused on specific themes such as oyster restoration, shallow water habitats, and fish and shellfish investigations.  

Classroom Programs

Educators from from the Office of Outreach & Engagement can visit your school for an outreach event, conducting hands-on activities with your students on a variety of topics.  For a list of current offerings, download our Classroom Programs flyer.

Resource Boxes

Boxes are available to any teacher, and are free, but require pick up and drop off at VIMS Gloucester Point. To read more about the boxes and reserve one online, please visit our Resource Boxes page. 

VASEA Lesson Collection

The Virginia Scientists & Educators Alliance (VA SEA) is a network of graduate students, teachers, and informal educators formed with the goal of translating scientific research into usable lesson plans. To date, 79 middle and high school lesson plans have been created based on current student research. Lessons and other supporting resources are available for free download from the VA SEA website

Blue Crab Bowl

The Virginia Regional Competition of the National Ocean Sciences Bowl showcases some of the Commonwealth's most talented science students as they display their mastery of oceanic knowledge. Teams from 16 high schools compete in a contest co-hosted by the Batten School & VIMS and Old Dominion University. The winning team goes on to represent Virginia at the National finals.

The Bridge

This web-based clearinghouse of the best online resources for marine science education is developed and maintained by Sea Grant marine education specialists at VIMS. 

Marine Science Careers

Learn about the diverse opportunities available for a career in marine science and the classroom, laboratory and research experiences that will help give your students a leg up.

Seafood Education

Virginia Sea Grant communicates current research information on seafood through workshops and seminars, cooking demonstrations and professional development programs for chefs.
